Inje University Report Week 1: Korean Calligraphy class

1 주차

한국문화 제음 수업 - Korean Calligraphy

In our recent Korean culture class, we got an opportunity to try our hand at Korean calligraphy. The teacher gave us each a booklet with a series of different styles of lettering to try and instructed on the best ways to achieve clean brush strokes. I found it quite challenging to control the brush neatly but she came around the class and helped all of us try to get better results.

She then showed us a series of more creative calligraphy pieces and encouraged us to try to come up with our own styles too. I decided to use an autumn theme and put the phrase “I am happy in Autumn.” “가울에 행복해요.”

We then were shown how we could transfer our calligraphy onto a fan and if we had time we could add colour to our designs too. I was a little nervous about making a mistake but eventually, I tried it and I was happy with the results. Everyone in the class had such unique and colourful designs I was impressed with what we all achieved it was a really fun experience.

Examples of Korean lettering, calligraphy style, our fan, a brush and some black ink. The fan is made of paper making it possible to paint on.

First, we practised drawing straight lines, you have to start at one end and keep a steady hand whilst finishing the stroke back into the line to give it a neat edge.

Above is an example of more artistic Korean calligraphy and on the below is my attempt at copying the style.
The teacher shows us how to paint onto the fan and this is my final result.

I will show you guys some of my interesting classes in blog posts again in the future.
