석가 탄신일 - Buddha's birthday
This year Buddha's birthday landed on 22nd of May, check the calendar on the year you visit Korea to see when it falls again. It is a public holiday so most people do not have work and school's take a break for the day.
I was really lucky to be able to see some really impressive lanterns at Samgwangsa temple on Buddha's birthday before they all get taken down until next year. The area surrounding the temple was really crazy busy so the easiest way to get there is to take a train or bus to Seomyeon.
First either get the 2/ 2-1 to Inje university station from the main gate ->
Gimhae light railway to Sasang station -> Green line to Seomyeon from there grab a taxi to the area near the temple it will cost around 6,000원
People hang their wishes along with their addresses and details hanging from lanterns
The sheer amount of lanterns at this temple was overwhelming and one man was going around changing the lightbulbs in them, what a job!
These lotus flower-shaped lanterns were my personal favourite.
These dragons moved and spat smoke every few minutes, scared the life out of me as I walked past!
Me and my friend Changsu
There are a few different temples in Busan but I really recommend this one on Buddha's birthday as the lanterns are the most extravagant.
